Computational Neuroscience

During the last years a research group in computational neuroscience has been formed at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences at Ås, 30 km south of Oslo. The group is positioned at the Department of Mathematical Sciences and Technology, a department responsible for computer science, mathematics and physics activities at the university. The department organizes B.Sc., M.Sc., M.Tech., and Ph.D. programs in these field, and students interested in computational neuroscience can take courses and do their thesis work in our group.

The topics of our research projects are:

Development of mechanistic models for receptive field of neurons in the lateral geniculate nucleus in the early visual pathway [LGN receptive fields]
Development of NEST, a simulator for networks of spiking neurons [NEST], and use NEST to simulate the entire early visual pathway from retina to visual cortex (V1)
Studies of simplified models for dynamics of interconnected cortical neuron populations [Cortical dynamics]
Modelling of extracellular signatures of neural activity, and the development of mathematical methods for analysis of data from cortical recordings with laminar electrodes [Extracellular modelling]
Network models of place-field formation in hippocampus
Interaction between nerve cells and glia cells
