Module for the post-graduate course in XI’AN- June 2004; Sustainable Development- Case Xi’an

Sustainable product and service design

Course objective:

The participants shall after two weeks of effort, inhabit a broad understanding of sustainable design, be able to use the essential therminology and relate these to a celection of  practical methods for development of new products and services with an environmently sustainable profile.

The participants will in the first week be challenging the different elements in sustainable thinking , and discuss how these are influencing the basis for product design.  Issues involved are strategys for life cycle design, sustainable material choices and long term perspectives, balancing the user needs, behaviour and culture.  Different methods will be explored through short workshops the first week of the course, for then to be implemented  in a group project the second week. The project work will be based on a case study from Xi'an, focusing on future solutions for sustainable mobility.

Level:  Post -Graduate course

Weighting:  7,5 study points (1 semester equals 30 study points)

Examination:  The group project must be compleeted and presented before attending a  2-hour exam, focusing on therminology and articles discussed during the course. The student will have an examination card from NTNU.

Course fee: For Norwegian participants: NOK 5000 (including local transport, the opening and closing banquets).

Transportation(air fair) : Has to be arranged (in due time!) by the student him/herself (about NOK 10.000). Local transport in Xi´an is included in the course fee.

Accommodation: Ye Yuan Hotel - the guest house of XUAT. Address: No 13 Yanta Road, Xi´an 71 00 55, Shaanxi Province, P.R. China. Price Yuan 170 per night. (Not included in the course fee).
