Wireless and fixed machine authorization at [Informatikk] ( !UtenEnTraad, !NoCat )
It should be simple to connect to the network if you have adequate wireless coverage where you are.
Once you have access to the wireless network and have obtained an IP address (DHCP), start
up a web browser. If you go to any page outside of UiB you will be taken to
a login page. You can also get there by going to http://nocat.ii.uib.no/cgi-bin/login
You must have a valid user name and password to be able to gain full access. Guests
can obtain limited access (port 80 - http, 443 - https, og 22 - ssh) by clicking on the 'skip' button.
Wireless
See [InternettTilLaptop] for coverage information. In the Data Block, HiB, you can access the nocat network
in floors 2-5.
Fixed (wired) connections
A number of offices have a !NoCat connection in the wall. These can be used by computers and laptops that are not maintained by the Department of Informatics.
Access to resources
Users who log in with username/password can access printers locally. Access to other resources (for example
your home directory) is through software such as ssh. The nocat network is essentially outside of the normal Informatikk network.
Printer access
All Informatikk printers are available under '\\cups\'. To install a printer
using [Windows] XP, carry out the following steps (AFTER you have logged in through the nocat interface).
- click 'start->printers and faxes'
- click 'Add a printer'
- in the wizard click 'next'
- choose 'a network printer...', click 'next'
- choose 'connect to this printer...'
- in the 'Name' field type '\\cups\' (do not press 'return') - at this stage a list of available printers should be displayed
- choose which printer you wish to use.
- click 'next'. The printer is installed automagically.
- complete the wizard dialogue ('next', then 'finish')
tada.
To print a test page, right click on the printer in 'printers and faxes', choose 'properties', then 'print test page'.
File transfer to II
The file systems (home directories) are not available through SMB but you can get access using ssh.
If you have a [Windows] 98/ME/XP computer, you can install ssh. UiB have a site licence look here. Download and install
this from UiB or from 'ssh.com'. for file transfer, use 'Secure File Transfer Client'. After installation you will find this under 'Start > SSH Secure Shell > Secure File Transfer Client'. You must connect to 'login.ii.uib.no' fto be able to transfer files between your laptop and II. The user interface should be fairly intuituive.
