Workshop
The EcoFish approach to fisheries advice
Workshop arranged by the project Ecosystem and Fish Stock Dynamics (EcoFish)
May 15th and 16th 2006
Villa Skjoldnes, Sundtsveg 57, Nesttun, Bergen ( tel: 55 13 73 60)
The objective of the workshop is to get a clear perspective of what is done elsewhere in the world before we establish the research direction of the EcoFish program. We therefore arrange a workshop among program participants and invite some external contributors. Mike Sinclair will give a talk on What are the expected gains of the ecosystem approach to fisheries? The Canadian perspective. We will have other guests as well both from inside and outside the Institute of Marine Research.
Topics:
This is part of the EcoFish strategy to · establish a common understanding of the problems and the challenges, · establish a sound scientific fundament with basis in the international literature, and · set priorities and initiate interaction among program scientists with different background.
The overriding questions we want to clarify are: What are the benefits from an ecosystem approach? And what approaches are available to reach the goal? To open our perspective we want external experts to help us answer these key questions as well as supporting the strategic issues listed above. Further, we will have talks and open for discussions on a series of issues:
i) What do indicators tell (stock, ecosystem, early warning, regime shifts)? ii) Ecosystem effects on recruitment (plankton, skipped spawning, environmental factors). iii) Are ecological processes relevant in an ecosystem approach to fisheries management? iv) How to handle uncertainty (inadequate data, lack of knowledge about processes, precautionary approach, modeling vs. observations).
