The Journal Clubs
The Ecological and
Environmental Change Research Group has two Journal Clubs
- one with a palaeo theme and one more general ecology. The
Journal Club meetings are a good way of staying updated
on the latest research. The meetings give us experience
in reading scientific literature and understanding and applying
complex scientific terms and ideas. It's not all about shredding
papers to pieces - there is a machine that does that - but
can help in recognising good practice for when writing your
own papers. Both students and researchers are welcome to join
the Journal Clubs!
The General Ecology Club meets every second
Friday over lunch to
discuss articles related to our
research interests.
Each person is responsible
for a journal and selects a couple of articles (new ones,
preferably) from that journal as suggestions for discussion. We briefly present the articles, and together, we decide which should be selected for discussion in the next meeting. The articles selected at the previous meeting are discussed, including the
research design, methods, theme and results.
We also select articles that may be interesting to the general public and write popular science articles based on them.
Please contact Brooke Wilkerson for
details.
The Palaeo Club meets once a month on a Tuesday
between 10:30 and 12:00 and discuss papers mainly related to
palaeoecology and climate change.
Our meetings are aimed at anyone interested
in palaeoecology, climate change and related topics. We usually
discuss two papers in each meeting, which two people have prepared
in advance. We also choose two new articles to
discuss for the next meeting. We hope to write up some of the
articles discussed as popular science for dissemination to
a wider audience.
