A construction engineer's task is to plan, design, build and manage buildings so that they satisfy the requirements of the authorities and the users. “Buildings” here include actual buildings, as well as roads, bridges and drainage. Engineers solve problems in many different roles, such as planners, consultants, contractors, as well as for the authorities.
An important part of the programme is what is called "learning on site". This means that already in the first semester students will be out on the construction site for a period of time. "Learning on site" will also constitute a significant part of the fifth semester. The programme thus integrates theory and practice differently than is traditional in civil engineer programmes in Norway. Guidance while out on construction sites is assured through agreements with contractors.
The programme is directed primarily at students who are interested in working on or in connection with construction sites and where they are able to contribute to the actual construction of structures. Students should be able to have the ability to take initiative and accept responsibility, be independent, and be able to lead others to a common goal.
In order to deal with the different roles and tasks in construction, students must develop good theoretical knowledge and the ability to cooperate with other organisations. This programme will pay particular attention to basics in technical subjects in order to establish the best possible foundation to work on, as well as the necessary expertise. At the same time, practical insights will be experienced through deployment on construction sites, tours and laboratory exercises. The first two years of the programme are similar to the Bachelor of Engineering - Civil Construction.
Graduates will be able to work in the construction industry, either as a construction manager/assistant, as a project developer, or in roles such as the contractor’s manager on site. Many other opportunities will also be found within both the public and private sectors.
