Nordberg campaign II of World in Flames

We play the Global war campaign using the latest rules and erratas. The game started in early March 2006, and is played every Friday evening in Gautes apartment at Nordberg, Oslo.

Options and house rules used in this campaign

Setup - USA
The US set up one entry chit against Japan, and two against Germany.
Setup - USSR
USSR set up a strong force on the Rumanian border. The Siberians set up on the border of Manchuria, together with Zhukov and two airplanes.
Setup - Italy
Balbo is set up close to Tunisia. A strong force is set up along the French border. The Inf div and the broken-down mountain unit is set up in La Spezia. The fleet is set up in Trieste, except the subs, the minisub and a few cruisers in La Spezia.
Setup - China
Strong setup behind the river line and in the mountains. The Shanghai militia starts in the desert in Northern China. Chang-Sha is defended by a lone Canton militia.
Setup - CW
Malta starts undefended. The Inf is set up on Gibraltar.
Setup - France
The fleet starts in Brest. France set up strong against Italy. The Mtn starts at Corsica.
Setup - Japan
Japan starts with most of the fleet in Canton. Terauchi starts north of Peking.
Setup - Germany
Germany start with most of the army against Poland. The amf and Trs start in Memel and Königsberg.

Sept/Oct 1939

Axis has initiative and must move first.

Germany DoW Poland.
Japan takes land, Germany takes land, Italy takes combined.
Italy sail an Inf div into West med. Japan ground strike the Shanghai mil in the north. It dow defends at 1. It is assaulted at +15 and 9 is rolled. Chang-Sha is assaulted at +12 with a 9 rolled. No US entry is awarded when the Tokyo militia walks into the city. German forces from East Prussia have an auto assault on Warzaw, taking the city without any losses.

Impulse 2, allies

England and France DoW Germany. USA rolls 10.
China takes land, England takes naval, France takes combined.
The French bomber strat bomb Germany for 2 production points. The Polish airplanes fly into Lithuania and the pilots are shipped to England.

Impulse 3, axis - 7 R R F R F F (2)

Italy DoW France, Germany DoW Denmark. England take control of the Danish navy.
Japan takes naval, Germany takes land, Italy takes combined.
Japan is allowed to teleport two convoys and two cruisers from Canton to Bay of Bengal (This was a poorly planned operation - these units should have been set up there at start of game).

Italy sail five cruisers into East med. They kill all the four French convoys there. The Nav in West med finds and kill two of the convoys there. The rest are aborted. Oran is invaded by an Italian Inf div. The Japanese convoys and cruisers in Bay of Bengal return to Mogadishu. The Mar div and Eng are transported to Azanian sea on two cruisers, along with a transport. The transport reorganize the convoys. Germany has serious supply problems, but Danmark is taken never the less.

Impulse 4, allies

USSR claims Bessarabia. Germany allows the claim.
England take navel, France take combined, China take land.
USSR rail Timo to the Caucasus. Massive British forces are moved to the Marseilles area. Russian forces enter East Poland. The US couldn't care less.

Hungary and Bulgaria make their demands. Their demands are allowed.
Italy reinforce Sardinia. Japan succed in a ground strike in north China. A mountain hex in Cina is assaulted at +4 with 10 rolled. Lodz is taken at +18 with 9 rolled. Mussolini finally remembers to place the reserves.

Impulse 6, allies

England takes combined, China takes land, France takes naval.
England attempt to strat bomb Germany. Little else happens.

Germany DoW Belgium. England takes control.
Japan takes land, Italy takes combined, Germany takes land.
An Italian Mech debarks in Oran. The Inf div advances to the rail intersection. The Belgian units are set up in Brussels and Liege. Germany ooze around them in order to avoid allied support to the country. Leeb assaults Liege at +19 and rolls 12. Japan takes a +11 assault in China and rolls 6. China can now counter attack Yamamoto and a Gar at +6.

Impulse 8, allies

China takes land, France takes land, England takes naval.
A British strat bombing raid is repelled by a German fighter. French forces blitz the southern forest of Belgium at +8, rolling 8. France now has four corps in Belgium. Chinese nationalists blitz Yamamoto and the Gar at +6. 18 is rolled, killing Yamamoto.

Japan takes combined, Italy takes combined, Germany takes combined.
The German fleet sails out into North sea in order to provide support on the attack at Antwerp. Japan, realizing that china has a potential +13 assault on Canton, takes combined and sails out some CVs to get air support and some BBs for gunnery support. Italian subs sink one French convoy and aborts another. German forces, assisted by battleships, have an auto assault on a French gun in Antwerp.

Impulse 10, allies

England takes naval, all others take pass.
The british home fleet sails out and tries to find the German ships in North sea. They find, but the Germans get enough surprise to avoid combat.

Brussels is assaulted at almost auto. No losses are inflicted on the Germans. Turn ends after axis, initiative moves to +1 axis.

A British infantry division lands in Fredrikshavn after an aircraft unit has cut supply for the notional defender.

Japan takes land, Italy takes combined, Germany takes land.
Japan attempts to strat bomb China, but fail. A large air battle is fought west of Metz as the Germans attack the resource hex. A French and an Italian fighter is shot down and the French bomber is clared through. The attack ends as a +8 blitz with 18 rolled. Italian units blitz a French infantry unit in Algeria at +16 and rolls high. Algiers is now within reach of the Italian Inf div.

Japan strat bomb one production point from China. Tunis is taken by the Italians. Cyprus is taken by a German Mtn div.

CW is allowed to teleport some convoys to sea. These are to be used to send lend lease to France. The move was forgotten earlier on. France rail another factory from Lille to Bordeaux. USSR rail moves Zhukov to East Poland as the red army HQ realizes that Germany may be able to break the treaty in January.

Japan takes naval, Italy takes land, Germany takes land.
Germany break through the French lines after a successful attack on Billotte. The Germans are now at the gates of Paris. Turn ends after allies. Initiative stays at 0.

Japan forces closure of the Burma road (no entry). China is strat bombed for 1 PP. Gort now finds himself disrupted in Lyon, out of supply. Axis forces assault the city at auto, killing the HQ. Metz is assaulted at +11, with 14 rolled.

The ore convoys are placed in the Baltics again, together with their escort. German subs go convoy hunting. Some British convoys are lost. The carrier planes from Glorious are shot down by a He-112 in west med. A Japanese Nav3 with pilot is shot down by a Chinese fighter during strat bombing. Japanese divisions land in Bushehr and Bandar Abbas.

French cruisers sail strong in the med. The Sydney Mil is sent to Bandar Shapur. The French ships search in various areas of the med, resulting in many French ships damaged. The British convoys in west med are also lost, putting Wavell out of supply. A German merchant raider is damaged in the Feroes gap. Another escapes to Lisbon. Berlin is strat bombed for one production point.

The Japanese Art disrupts Mao. Italian and German units infiltrate the central parts of France. No attacks are made.

Germany takes land, Italy takes combined, Japan takes naval.
Japanese transports sail naval units to their targets. Chang is disrupted by an Ann bomber. The Italian Cicona bomber fail its attempt to ground strike the British out-of-supply black print Mot in Algiers. Wavell provides emergency HQ supply for himself and a Mot in southern France. He is also disrupted by a German bomber.

CW takes naval, France takes land, China takes land. USSR takes the Baltic states (an entry chit is lost).
The Royal navy reopens the supply link to the units in the med. French units take up better positions around Paris.

Impulse 3, axis - 6 F F F R F F (1)

Italy takes combined, Grmany takes land, Japan takes land.
A large air battle takes place in west med. Two British planes are lost, as well as the convoys providing supply for their units in the area. Wavell is now out of supply (and disrupted). Italian units attack Wavell in Tolun at +13. The British choose blitz and Italy roll *1/B. Two German attacks in France go well for the axis.

Impulse 4, allies

France takes combined, CW takes combined. China takes land.
The British and a french transport attempt to bring supply to Malta, resulting in an epic fleet battle between axis and allied ships and aircraft. The presence of German, Italian, French and British units, allow everybody to shoot at each other. Four Italian ships are killed. The royal navy loose the same number of ships, but the British losses are battleships and cruisers. The Italian losses are light cruisers. The transport is aborted, keeping Malta and Algiers out of supply.

Some Japanese troops are ferried to China. An Italian artillery try to disrupt a British Mot north of Marseilles, but fails.

CW takes combined, France takes land, China takes land.
CW attempts to bring supply to west med by sending two convoys and some escort to the sea area. The comvoys are killed by a German Nav. Turn ends on a one after allies. Initiative stays at +1 axis.

Germany takes land, Italy takes combined, Japan takes naval.
Italy sail the subs with orders to ambush French naval units. Japan ships land and aircraft units to China. The Japanese ground srikes against the communists fail. Also the Italian ground strikes fail at disrupting their targets (a British Mot in Algiers and a stack of Frenchmen in Marseilles). The German artillery pieces shelling Paris manage to disrupt only a fighter plane. No attacks are made. Von Leeb is teleported within range of the artillery and then reorganizes them.

A British sub sinks a German convoy in the Baltics, and aborts the rest. Little else happens.

Italy takes air, Japan takes land, Germany takes land.
The Chinese aircraft is shot down by Japanese airplaned during a land attack. Japan attacks the resource hex north of Canton at +9 and rolls 3. Two attacks are made by German units in France. One +14 blitz with a 5 rolled with a Mot killed by the defenders. The other attack is a +11 blitz with 8 rolled. This time a Mot div participate in order to soak losses. Italy rebase aircraft and reorganize the bomber in Algeria.

CW takes combined, France takes land, China takes land.
A British aircraft attempts to ground strike Guderian, but they fail. Chinese nationalists counter-attack a stack of Japanese units north of Canton at +8. The defenders choose a fighting withdrawal and the Chinese roll 7.

The fast German cruisers sail out into North sea. Submarines go convoy hunting and the raiders head for asia. The fleet sailing to North sea is repelled with Sharnhorst damaged. Terauchi reorganize two bombers.

The Luftwaffe goes on the offensive over the skies of Denmark and shoots down a french wing of MS 406s, but the pilots manage to escape and evade. In the Western Mediterraninen a wing of He-115c' ambushes the english convoys transporting supplies and resources, sinking about 300 000 tons of merchant shiping. Graziani lead the italian assult on the english enclave of Algers, the english 4th Mot corps and 2nd Inf division faught valientlly but no avail. The Royal Navy let the British Army in a pinch, as the light cruiser Aurora and parts of the transport fleet fled the battle, seeking refuge in Alexandria. In Southern China the weather cleared up and Yamamoto lead the Imperial Guard and the Imperial Japanese Army in a brilliant blitz on the mines, in the woods south west of Chang-Sha. The KMT 14th Inf army and 20th Reserve army was surprised and was delt an ignomonious defeat.

China addresses its lines while the STAVKA playes wargames against a suppoused invasion from an unnamed aggressor invading from the west, as for whom the aggressor is suppoused to be is kept a secret as the Sovietunion currently doesn't have any enemies in the west.

As the howling typhoon lashes the japanese forces, the Imperial high command reorganizes its forces in the chinese ocupation zone, and rebases its land based air wings to the southern sector. Luftwaffe starts up the Blitz on London, it fizzles as the training wing of Ju-86G does not find its targets. A trickle of german reinforcements to Mussolini starts to arrive long the italian riviera, while heavy german forces mass against the british stronghold of Bordeaux. In the french alpes the out of supply and cut off british 10th Mot Corps holds out valiantlly against the bombs from the Luftwaffe. The Italian Navy's submarines sortie out to Cape St. Vincent, Bay of Biscay and the North Atlantic Cap. Straight from the Naval repair docks of Trieste, the battleship Andrea Doria initiates a war patrol in the Eastern Mediterraninen, where it engages the French Navy. The italians get the jump on the french that are surprised, the heavy cruiser Duplex is damaged, and Malta is isolated. The Italian Naval Air Corps reinforces its presance along the atlantic coast with Z 501 Gabbiano and the Ju-88a1, escorted by a Me-109e1.

In a desperate move the French Navy sends out its Battleships against the italian submarines. The english code breakers at Bletchley Park decrypts ENIGMA intercepts about a combined german/italian operation code named FELIX. The Royal Navy Mediterraninen Fleet, lead by the battlecruisers Hood and Repulse, sorties out against axis transport fleet movements in the Western Mediterranien. The Royal Navy shows superior seamanship and jumps the italian transport fleet shipping the Roma milita army to Algiere. In a counter attack from the a combined Luftwaffe and Italian Navy force bombing Hood, damaging the pride of the Royal Navy. As Hood limps away from the engagement. The sunset hearalds the end of 1940. Initiative stays at +1 axis.

In the Chinese Occupation Zone, Yamamoto and Umezu, move toward the coast, taking with it the flower of the Imperial Japanese Army. Interdiction bombing against the KMT positions protecting the mines located in the woods south east of Kwei- Yang, fails to imobilize the bulk of the armies there, only holding up the 2nd KMT Cav Divion. In Europe the German Army mops up the 10th Mot Corps without any losses and moves onward after the operation is finsished. Kurt Student leads his students in the 2nd Fallschirmjäeger Corps in an airborne assult on Malta, supported by 5th Gebirgsjäeger divison and 2nd Inf division. Death from above rains down on the french defenders of the staunch island, whiping out the 1st Inf division. The French heavy cruiser Foch was damaged as the italian light cruiser Barbiano intercepted it when it escaped the german assult.

The Communist chinese goes into its winter quarters while the Nationalist addresses its lines and beefs up its defense in preperations for the expected janpanese offensive. US Navy escorts the east coast, while the Royal Navy sends new convoys to the home isles. While the Mediterrainen Fleet salies out into the Western Mediterrainen into two seperate squadrons, the axis spies alert their high commands, that scrambles their naval air assets in an effort to catch the Fleet in a crossfire. Due to heavy fog the two forces pass eachother unseen. The French Navy aggressivly seek battle and reinforces the Royal Navy in the Eastern Mediterranien and sends submarines to patrol the Italian Coast. Due to the ice the british submarine force in the Baltic Sea fails to find the swedish iron ore convoys. Bomber Harris starts his campaign of de-housing the german workers, but the system is not yet perfect as hitting the assigned target is a problem.

Grand Admiral Dönitz sends forth his uboots in consort with Grand Admiral Rëder's surface fleet. The surface taskforce engages the remaining Royal Danish Navy in the North Sea, the cruisers Niels Juhl and Peder Skram are damaged, with the later sucumbing to its wounds sinking after a second wounding at the hands of the german taskforce. A combined german italian submarine wolfpack jumps the anglo-french convoy in Cape St. Vincet sinking 450 000 register tonns of merchant shipping. In the snow drifts of the Eastern Mediterranien the heavy cruiser E. Di Savoia with the light cruiser Barbiano, catches the light french cruiser Emile Bertin in a crossfire sinking it in one fell blow. In the Western Mediterranien the Italian Navy in cooperation with the Luftwaffe finds the Royal Navy Mediterranien Fleet, the light cruiser Effingham gets separated and steams home for Gibraltar. The battle lasts over several days, and during the battle the battlecruiser Repulse and light cruiser Hawkins can't keep up and seek shelter in Gibraltar. As the battle rages on the battlecruiser Ramillies is damaged and the battlecruisers Warspite and Royal Oak escort it to the naval dock yards at Gibraltar. The Italian surface taskforce then closes with the remnants of the Royal Navy Mediterranian Fleet, and in a gunnery dual the light cruiser Calypso sinks under the waves, and the Battlecruiser Resolution is damaged along with the heavy cruiser Manchester ending up at the dry docks at Gibraltar. Following up on this success the Luftwaffe's FW-200c "Condor" wing gets bounced by a wing of RAF Mk. 1 Beaufighters, the Italian Navy fails to pick up the downed Luftwaffe pilots which subsequently all freeze to death in the cold water. As this human tragedy pans out in the water the surface navies slug it out which reults in the pride of the RAN, the heavy cruiser Australia kealing over and sinking to the depths, the italian heavy cruiser Garibaldi takes a beating, but refuses to steam for home until after it manages to sink the french battleship Jean Bart along with 150 000 register tonns of merchant shipping. As the weather closes the forces get separated and the battle is over, leaving the Axis the masters of the Western Mediterranien. The Imperial Japanese Navy's Combined Fleet steams for the forward base of Truk, the fleet consist mainly of heavy cruisers and some submarines. The Nagoya Milita Army begins to fortify the base. The 25th Inf Army is deployed to the Siamese harbor town of Swang-Kla.

China continues to adress its lines strengthening the sailents that pretrudes into the japanese lines. In preperations for Operation Felix, the Spanish goverment sends their diplomants to Great Britain in the hopes of securing a joint defense treaty. Meanwhile Graziani calls the heavy cruisers Pola and Trieste to Oran where he sets up docking facilites for them to base out from, while the heavy cruisers Gorizia and Zara escorts the Italian Navy Transport Fleet, that is busy shipping the german paratroppers.

The British intelligence is just as surprised over the discovery as the Italians are. The combined German and Italian navy sail to the sea zones where both French and British chips escort convoys. The subs fail to find anything. HMS Royal Sovereign is sunk by Bismarck, Gneisnau and their support ships. The IJN ships troops around.

A French sub sails out into Italian coast, but is aborted after it is found by the Italian hunter-killer group. The British submarine sinks and aborts the German convoys in the Baltics. The British home fleet search for German ships in the North sea, but fail at finding them. The French battleships Strasbourg and Dunkerque find the Italian and German nav planes in west med and actually manage to abort the German nav form the sea zone.

The Italian main fleet sails out into west med in search of the French battleships, but fail to find anything. A combined airforce of Luftwaffe and Regina aeronautica manage at disrupting the British force in Bordeaux. Alexander and the 7-3 Inf are now in danger. The city is assaulted at +8, with a 11 rolled. The result is 2/2 with half disruption of the attackers. Bordeaux is taken, and Alexander is killed.

They get the drop on the Italians and proceede to sink the venerable battleship C. di Cavour and 150 000 register tons of merchant shipping, damages the old battleship Andrea Doria and Guilio Cesare, the heavy cruisers Gorizia and Trento, and the light cruiser Cadorna. Following this the Italian Navy counter attacks and sink the battlecruiser Royal Oak, and the heavy cruisers Canberra, Effingham and Hawkins. Further more the battlecruisers Repulse and Warspite are damaged.

Germany sends forth its legions agains the spanish defenders, while the Italian Navy's finest, the frogmen, tries a daring operation against Gibraltar, that goes splendid in the begining, but amounts only to some paint scratches on the British Ampibious Fleet. While the rest of the transport and surface fleet picks up its german brothers in a attack on the spansih beaches. The Italian pickets sends home the Royal Navy pickets Cairo. Luftwaffe dives out of the sun raining bombs on the spanish defenders, imobilizing many of the spanish corps, among them Franco himself. The invasion then procedes into Cartagena and over the passes in the Pyreenes. East of Bilbao the Spanish 2nd Mech get assulted to death, while along the coast five divisions land.

The weather clears up and the Luftwaffe drops out of the skies over Gibraltar and imobolizes everything, and grounds all the aircraft. The follow up attack fails as Kurt Student leads his students in the 7th Fallschirmjäger Div, under Von Leebs overall directions. The 46th Panzergrenadier Corps along with 5th Air Landing Div assults into the Rock. In the Western Mediterranien the majority of the Italian surface navy supports the effort with their guns blazing. Over the important port city the RAF and Luftwaffe fights out a desperate battle to help their respective armies. Both air forces get some of their bombers through but the RAF are not able to get all the bomber wings into the action. As the eve of the fateful battle stands the heroic British Army stands their ground suffering horrendous losses in the prosses, losing the 50 Lowland Div, and 6th Canadian Gar Corps, but on their way to hell they take with them the 7th Fallschirmjäger division and the 46th Panzergreandier Corps. The 8th Mechanized Corps stands heroicly on the Rock and beats it chest in unison with the bag pipers wailing notes.

The 50th Lowlanders and 1st Fuisilers march over the straights into Gibraltar. The Spanish Cavalry takes a last huzzah against von Leeb with support from the French Navy but Itallian CAS saves the day. In Italian Somaliland the Nigerian Territoraial Corps in support with 2nd Div in a attack on the Itallian Territorials, the fighting was hard but the Nigerian Territorial was left the masters of the battlefield.

Germany reorganized themselves around Gibraltar they conqoured, Sevilla, Barcelona and Madrid. The fight for Madrid was over in a blink as the millita from Sevllia was busy fighting in Madrid but was assulted by heavy german forces led by both 5th Gebirgsjäger divsion, 57th Panzer Corps and Deutches Afrika Korps, which is on its way to Africa. The militia melted away under the relentless preasure. The Itallians tried to capture the Royal Navy light cruiser Bonaventure, guarded by the Nigerian Territorial, but the would be boarders were repealed with heavy losses to the Itallians.

The attack was costly as the Egyptians perished in the effort. A wing of Coastal Command's Sunderlands rebased from the coast of Marocco to Port Sudan. France and Spain took up the ward of the allied lines of communication. A French submarine force tried to locate the Sardinian convoys but fail due to heavy fog.

Also the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm goes up in heroic CAP over Gibraltar with their antiquated Nimrods against the state of the art Bf-109 e2 Emil. The Germans not suspecting the nimbleness of the old biplanes are taken by surprise and are forced to abandon their Italian charges a wing of Ju-88s. The Italians seeing the aerobatic mastery of the British pilots loose their stomach for the fight and flee home to Algerie.

A Canadian submarine in Fredrikshavn tries to find German convoys, but fail also here. The Italian Nav pickets in East med damage two British cruisers after the naval activity there. Japanese units assault a Chinese Cav division on auto odds, granting a production multiple to China.

The american subs in Coral sea commit suicide against a Japanese Nav, as the Japanese gets 7 surprise points and the Americans roll 1 on all saves. Indian units advance east in Burma. An air battle is fought in Romania as some TB-3 attempt to reorganize units. The German player rolls 20, killing a TB-3 while the Russian player rolls 19. The battle is, however, at +-5 and at night, so the German fighter is only aborted.

Vincent, but fail to find anything. Rudel loose his aircraft, but survive himself, along with a Romanian pilot in an attempt to ground strike the Russians.

The US main fleet is sent to South China sea clearing the sea zone of convoys. Invasions are conducted in the Bordeaux area with Lancasters and carrier planes providing air support. Vatutin takes a train to Siberia. The Red army makes several attacks on the east front, failing some and succeeding some. Finland is in dire straits, so do Bucuresti. Hanoi is assaulted at +9 with 18 rolled. A US marine div invades on the Phillipines. This has been a deadly impulse for the axis.

The Imperial navy sails out convoy escorts and establish a wall of battleships outside Vladivostok. Reinforcements from Japan are ready on transports. Eisenhower and friends are blitzed at +12 in the Great Kesselschlacht in France. Most of the invasion force is cut off from the coast, resulting in an immediate resignation of the US president. The resignation was confirmed a week later, triggering an allied surrender.
