Academic Interests

Janne Bondi Johannessen's interests are in two different areas: theoretical linguistics (syntax and morphology) and language technology.

Her linguistic research has focussed on coordination, negation and negative polarity items, compounding, and topics related to these, such as correlative adverbs and word order more generally. The languages she has looked at in particular, have been Norwegian and the other Scandinavian and Germanic languages, and Modern Greek, but she has also done work in a wider cross-linguistic perspective.

Her language technology interests are closely linked to her role as head of the Text Laboratory, and her work here is very much part of a collaborative effort. The projects include: part of speech tagging, named entity recognition, corpus (text and speech) and interface development, grammars and treebanks, grammar checking, grammar games, statistical methods, computational lexicography.

Areas of supervision

Theoretical linguistics: Syntax (minimalism), morphology.
Language technology: a wide range of topics related to Text Laboratory projects.
