Ny Ålesund
Ny-Ålesund is a research station -formerly a mining town - in the northern part of the Svalbard archipelago. The magnetometre there has been in operation since 1966; digital recording commenced 1986. The station was regarded as a magnetic observatory until 2002. It has now status of calibrated variometer due to low calibration frequency and unsatisfactory foundation of the magnetometer sensor.
