The magnetometer is found close to the village Hasvik at the south-west end of the island Sørøya at the north coast of Norway. A magnetometer was operated at the site since the early 1980's as part of the Finnish-German EISCAT/IMAGE chain. Tromsø Geophysical Observatory took over the site in September 2001.
