Project description:
Rapid cessation of breastfeeding is recommended by the World Health Organization as a strategy to reduce postnatal transmission of HIV. However, there have been few reports of either its feasibility and/or the experiences of HIV-infected mother who stop breastfeeding for this purpose. This study will critically assess how HIV-infected women plan to and experience stopping breastfeeding, if rapid cessation is feasible and how their children are fed during the transition period period (from breastfeeding to replacement feeding). The study will also explore the role of the key community members and HIV/PMTCT counsellors in supporting HIV-infected mothers in this strategy.
