The Nordic Collegiate Programming Contest 2007 was arranged on the 6th of October. Java the ^ from NTNU was the best student team and managed to solve all 9 problems, which isn't even intended to be doable in the 5 hour contest.
The non-student team Three-Headed Monkey from KTH was the only other team to solve 9 problems and became the best team in the open class division, having completed the problem set faster than Java the ^.
A total of 4 teams from NTNU are advancing to the regional Northwestern European Programming Contest in Utrecht in November. The national organizing committee sponsors the top two teams and the best young team, which were all from NTNU, and IDI sponsors the fourth best team.

The Cell BE (Broadband Engine) processor, developed by Sony, Toshiba and IBM, is used in the PlayStation 3 game console, as well as in compute servers for the oil industry and other compute intensive applications. The nine processor cores may produce a substantial performance speedup compared to traditional processors, but mastery of its compute power requires heterogeneous parallell programming skills.
44 participants from the Nordic countries participated in Duc Vianney's two days programming course at NTNU. Duc Vianney is the education lead of the Cell Ecosystem and Solutions Enablement team at IBM. Currently he is on a Europe tour to educate programmers in the skills required to harness the power of the Cell processor. Warzawa and Belgium are next in line on his visit to Europe.
Professor Lasse Natvig was the NTNU coordinator for the event.

The paper "SArt: Towards Innovation at the Intersection of Software Engineering and Art" by Anna Trifonova, Salah U. Ahmed, and Letizia Jaccheri was nominated as one of the five best papers (of 90 in total) at the International Conference on Information Systems Development.
The evaluation committee proclaimed that "the paper is not only very interesting (because of the innovative topic of art and software), but it also shows solid and serious research and is very well written".
Anna is from Bulgaria, Salah is from Bangladesh, and Letizia is from Italy. A great example of the department's multi cultural work force.

For almost two weeks this year's new students have been working in groups, making computer games. The teaching assistants nominated ten of the games for a final demonstration, and a student vote. The demonstration of the games marked the end of the Teknostart and Realstart events for the new students.
Escape from Dragvoll won the student's vote. It was created by Stupid Cat Productions (Michael Marszalek, Nikhil Luthra, Geir I. Kihle Hanssen, Stian Paulsen, Cai Helltun, Jon Kjetil Øye, and Ole Mikkel Sjølie) which appear in the photo.

To run the game: Install Scratch and download the file Escape from Dragvoll which you open from the Scratch application.
Apple Theft Auto and Superhøna Turbo came in 2nd and 3rd place. The other nominated games were: Andy's Aquarium, Dance Trance 2008, Space, Tanks, Invation, Air Protector, and Super Zario Zos. Each member of the three best teams won NOK 500.
