Saturday, July 16: Hiking
There will be a choice between two mountain hikes in the Bergen city mountains,
one longer and more strenuous, the other shorter and easier. Both hikes will be guided.
The longer hike will be the Bergen classic "over vidden", which means "over the plateau".
It goes between the mountains Fløyen and Ulriken, and is mostly above the treeline, offering panoramic views.
This is not a difficult hike, but it is rather long, about 5 hours of walking, close to 6 including breaks.
The path is often rocky and there are a few steep hills. Please do not choose this hike
if you're not sure you're in shape for hiking that far. There is no easy way to cut it
short once you're up on the plateau.
The shorter hike will be on Mount Fløyen. The paths here are easier to walk on (mostly gravel),
and on this hike we will be more flexible as to how far we want to go.
This hike can last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours depending on what the participants would like.
For both hikes you should bring enough to drink and eat on the way.
If you are staying at a hotel, you can ask them if you can make sandwiches at the breakfast buffet.
They will provide you with something to wrap the sandwiches in (and charge you for the sandwiches).
You can also buy sandwiches at many grocery stores and bakeries.
Both groups will meet at the Holberg statue outside of the tourist information office
(see i on the
map).
The people who want to take the longer hike meet there at 11 a.m.
Those who want the shorter hike meet at noon.
In case of rain, we will meet inside the tourist information office and make an alternative plan.
We may for instance choose to visit a museum first and hope that the weather will improve.
Or if the rain is only light we may decide to start walking anyway. The long hike over the plateau will
not be possible if the weather is poor.
In any case, dress for the occasion according to the
weather.
Sunday, July 17: Excursion
The excursion will include visits to the
Fantoft stave church
and Ole Bull's
villa on the island
Lysøen,
with a guided tour of the
interior.
The cost of the excursion will be 150
NOK (Norwegian kroner).
Please bring this amount in cash.
We will meet in Christies gate at Festplassen (close to the little lake on the
map) at 1 p.m.,
where a chartered bus will pick us up.
Please be on time, because the bus will leave shortly after 1 p.m. and we cannot wait for anyone.
There will be no opportunity to buy lunch along the way,
so if you haven't had lunch before the excursion, you should bring something with you.
There will however be a snack served at Lysøen at 3 p.m.
The bus will bring us back to the center of Bergen by around 6 p.m.
Tuesday, July 19: Banquet
The conference dinner will be at Lyststedet Bellevue, indicated in the top right corner on this
map.
The dinner will be preceded by a welcome drink between 7:15 and 7:45.
The restaurant can be reached in different ways:
(a) on foot via Fjellveien in about 35 minutes from the the lower station
of Fløibanen via Fjellveien (a scenic pedestrian road indicated in grey on the map).
(b) by bus 11 in the direction of Starefossen
from Småstrandgaten (where it says "Post", bottom left on the map).
This bus leaves around 7 p.m and will drive on the the road indicated in yellow on the map.
(c) by funicular (Fløibanen) to Fjellveien station,
and from there about 20 minutes on foot on the scenic pedestrian
road Fjellveien. The 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 funiculars stop at Fjellveien station.
