The newly established Nordic Centre of excellence in “Bioactive Food Components and Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases” has available 5 postdoctoral research fellow positions for 2 years. This Nordic centre is a consortium of 8 research groups located in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden and is funded by NordForsk, an independent Nordic research institution. The aim of the centre is to conduct research within food, nutrition and health. The focus of the research will be on identifying and investigating novel components from marine raw materials which will improve mitochondrial function and thereby have the potential of preventing metabolic disease. The candidates are expected to collaborate with the other partners in the Centre, spending part of their working time utilising facilities made available by these partners. Positions are available within the following research fields: 1. Screening and evaluation of bioactive fractions improving mitochondrial function. The research fellow will work at the Institute of Medicine, University of Bergen, Norway. The successful applicant must have achieved a doctorate in clinical biochemistry or equivalent education and be proficient in spoken and written English. The applicant will work in an interdisciplinary research group, and should have a strong background in molecular and cellular biology with an emphasis on lipid metabolism and mitochondrial function. Practical experience with animal studies, dietary studies and molecular biology including radioisotope techniques is considered a merit. More information on this position is available from Professor Rolf K Berge, +47 55973098, e-mail: Rolf.Berge@med.uib.no The salary will be paid in accordance with level 54 on the government salary scale (code 1352). From the gross wage a 2% law-enforced membership fee in the State Pension Fund (“Statens Pensjonskasse”) is deducted. Female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply, as the University of Bergen wishes to attain a more equal gender distribution for academic positions. If several applicants are equally qualified for the position, the internal rules for gender quotas for academic positions will be applied. State employment shall reflect the multiplicity of the population at large to the highest possible degree. The University of Bergen has therefore adopted a personnel policy objective to ensure that we achieve a balanced age and sex composition and the recruitment of persons of various ethnic backgrounds. Persons of different ethnic backgrounds are therefore encouraged to apply for the position. The University of Bergen applies the principles of public access to information related to appointments in academic positions. The applicant must comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at any time. The application must include a complete overview of education and professional activities (CV), scanned copies of diplomas and transcripts and a list of publications and other scientific works. Applications (3 copies in similar bundles) should be sent to Institute of Medicine, University of Bergen, Postboks 7800, 5020 Bergen, Norway. The deadline is 17 November 2007, and applications should be marked: “MitoHealth” 2. Effects of marine bioactive on signal transduction and transcriptional regulation in adipocytes and muscle cells. The post doc will work in the research group of Susanne Mandrup, Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark, Odense (http://www1.sdu.dk/Nat/bmb/faculty/sm.html). The work will be focused on dissecting the molecular mechanism of action of fatty acids and other marine bioactive compounds on transcriptional regulation and signal transduction important for mitochondrial function. Analyses will include cell culture, expression array analyses, real-time PCR, metabolic assays, reporter gene assays, chromatin immunoprecipitation, RNAi and lentiviral work. The post doc will work closely together with other PhD students and post docs on related projects. Applicants should have a PhD degree (or expect to obtain one latest spring 2008) and should have a strong background in molecular biology. Applicants with experience with cell culture will be prefered. More information on this position is available from Professor Susanne Mandrup Telephone: +45 6550 2340 s.mandrup@bmb.sdu.dk The application must include the following: 1) curriculum vitae, including a list of all publications; 2) a written summary of research experience; and 3) recommendations Applications will be assessed by a committee of experts, and applicants will be informed of their assessment by the university. The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The University encourages all interested persons to apply, regardless of age, gender, religious affiliation or ethnic background. Please send 3 copies of the application with enclosures, marked “MitoHealth”, to the Personnel Office, University of Southern Denmark, Campusvej 55, DK-5230 Odense M, Denmark or by e-mail to: pers@sdu.dk. The application must be sent to the University no later than 17 November 2007. 3. Organellar proteomics and functional phosphoproteomics A postdoctoral position is available to study the proteome and phosphoproteome of human mitochondria. The successful candidate will apply state-of-the-art mass spectrometry technologies, including LC-MS/MS, to characterize the mitochondrial proteome and phosphoproteome as a function of diet and various cellular stimuli. The qualified candidate has experience in molecular cell biology and protein biochemistry, preferably with skills in cellular fractionation techniques and protein characterization methods. Experience within the areas of biological mass spectrometry and bioinformatics is preferable, but not a requirement. The position is available at the University of Southern Denmark at Odense.
