In my research project, I study the terminology and phraseology in English popular science books on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) translated into Spanish. My objective at Bergen will be twofold as follows. First, the project aims at gaining knowledge of corpora software tools in order to investigate the language use in popular science books on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Software tools can be of assistance in studying, for example, collocations, i.e. the likehood of co-ocurrences of lexical items. The second goal would be to discover what the most appropriate software alignment tools are and how to use them in order to analyse an ad-hoc English-Spanish biotechnology corpus. To achieve this double aim, a two million-word bilingual parallel corpus consisting of twenty-two popular science books on GMOs was compiled so as to examine the terminology and phraseology which impregnates the genre of popularisation in English and Spanish. In order to compare the translated terminology rendered into Spanish, a one million-word reference corpus was also compiled. This monolingual corpus consists of eleven books written by Spanish native speakers so as to track how terminology and phraseology of popular science books on GMOs has undergone an evolution. |
