The narrative is built around the stories of several of the characters living in the remote Sámi village of Máhtebáiki in Northern Finland, from the beginning of the 1960s through the 1980s. The people here are small-scale farmers and follow a traditional agricultural way of life. Different characters appear in the story, among others a writer, a fisherman, an elderly woman reflecting upon the developments in the society, a horseman, a housewife and even a painter. They all have to face different challenges in life. What kind of coping skills do the characters in Árbbolaččat need in times of poverty and in order to withstand the pressures from the majority society? What happens with the characters that could be said to be “ahead of their time”, and still have to manage within the traditional community? This is a time when the people in Árbbolaččat experience transition from the traditional ways to the new times that are approaching. The interpretation is grounded in a contextual reading of the text, where I use knowledge about Sámi history, community life and Sámi traditional ways of communication as a frame where I place the fictional text. I also investigate the textual elements including narration, narrative levels, character analysis and speech representation. I have used the yoik theory, based on Sámi yoik tradition, as a theoretical backdrop to explain the individual’s place within the community. This is something new in the investigation of Sámi prose. This has probably been the most challenging part of this study, and also the most innovative part. I especially emphasize the contextual part of the yoik tradition and how it has functioned as a social device in the Sámi community, and what people’s worldview and life philosophy tell us about life in a small Sámi village. The emphasis in this study is on character analysis. The coping skills of the Árbbolaččat characters are closely connected to how they manage to move on with their lives. This theme is repeated in the story, and is an element in the text that is significant to the development of the plot and the story. The coping skills are linked to how each of the characters gets their livelihood. For some characters it is also of utmost importance to obtain an attractive job. Almost all the characters manage to cope, one way or another. They have their coping skills and ways to adjust to and handle challenges in life and the new times that are coming. Those characters in Árbbolaččat who live alone, are generally the most unhappy. The Árbbolaččat trilogy brings philosophical reflections on the characters at the individual level, as members of the community, and with respect to their relationship to the majority society, in connection with the arrival of new times and how they will continue to survive.; Romantrilogien Árbbolaččat (Arvingane) er skrevet av den samiske forfatteren Jovnna-Ánde Vest. Trilogien omhandler personene i Máhtebáiki, ei lita samisk bygd i Nord-Finland.

Nøkkelord: Læstadianisme, statskirke, differensiering; This thesis describes the relationship between the Laestedian movement and the Church of Norway, with emphasis on the period 2000-2010. Two Laestadian groups are being treated,- the Firstborn group and the Lyngen group. The basis for the treatment is two emerging conflicts between these groups and the church, - the Firstborn group from 2000 and the Lyngen group in 2008. The question to be answered is whether the turmoil that arose from these conflict, coincide with overarching processes at the beginning of the decade.

Towards the 21st century, several historical processes gained new relevance. The Church of Norway was gradually separated from government leadership. Simultaneously, the Norwegian society moved towards greater diversity in relation to faith. This situation caused an adjustment of the identity of the church and it emerged as a separate organization, detached from the state. At the same time, the Firstborn and Lyngen groups underwent changes in their relationship with the church. The motivation behind this development is seen as a need for growth in the face of a rapidly changing society.<br />

Adjectival and Genitival Modification in Definite Noun Phrases in Icelandic - A Tale of Outsiders and Inside Jobs

Pfaff, Alexander Peter<br />
Icelandic provides substantial diversity of modification patterns in definite noun phrases not found in other languages. This thesis takes a closer look at that diversity and argues that various (morpho-) syntactic and semantic aspects of adjectival modification can be used as diagnostics for a layered noun phrase structure. I propose that the noun phrase structure can be segmented into four distinct zones where each zone defines a distinct entity (i.e. the denotation of a nominal projection is a function of the size of that projection). Once established, a zonal structure allows us to considerably simplify the semantics of adjectival modification in that it is not necessary to assume different kinds of adjectives. Rather the interpretation of the adjective is dependent on the zone in which it is merged, and thus on the entity it modifies. Following a proposal by Adger (2013), I develop an analysis of DP-genitives that allows us to account for an Icelandic-specific problem (genitive stranding), but moreover, allows us to abolish the distinction common vs. relational noun (and concomitantly, genitive modifier vs. argumental genitive). This traditional distinction can be simulated by the structure containing the genitival being merged in different positions in the nominal structures, i.e. in different zones. This means that genitival modification is also a matter of being merged in a certain zone. This insight opens the prospect that adjectival and genitival modification can be simplified and unified to a considerable extent.<br />

Gerundio no perifrástico.

Moreno, Arlanda<br />
This thesis describes the uses of the non–periphrastic gerund in the Spanish of Mérida, Venezuela. A functional analysis of this form has been conducted. It explores mainly the semantics, pragmatics and sociolinguistics of this verbal form in two oral corpora.

I propose that its main interpretation is temporal. To demonstrate this assertion, I explore the Arktionsart of the gerunds and analyze the subevent structure that the gerund and the main verb form. I show that gerunds are mainly activities. Accomplishments, states and achievements tend to be interpreted as activities if they appear as gerunds.

Regarding to its pragmatics, I suggest that this form can introduce new and old information according to its position within the sentence. The results show that the gerund placed at the beginning of a sentence introduces old information interpreted as frames and gerunds placed at the end of a sentence introduce new information that can be interpreted as comments.

On the presumption that young and non-educated speakers would use more often the non-periphrastic gerund, the sociolinguistic analysis was carried out. The analysis enabled to show that the hypothesis was wrong. Non-educated speaker obtained lower results than the other groups. There are not significant differences related to age and there are few differences related to sex.

The main contributions of this thesis to the study of the non-periphrastic gerund are the following: a deep analysis of its Aktionsart and subevent structure as well as the study of its pragmatic functions. In addition, this thesis presents evidence of a semantic interpretation that has not been described before: especificativa and provides evidence of the use of this form in positions that usually are occupied by the infinitive.<br />

Non-Standard Allomorphy in Russian Prefixes: Corpus, Experimental, and Statistical Exploration

Endresen, Anna<br />
This dissertation challenges the traditional idealized model of allomorphy by confronting it with comprehensive data on 15 Russian aspectual prefixes (RAZ-, RAS-, RAZO-, S-, SO-, PERE-, PRE-, VZ-, VOZ-, O-, OB-, OBO-, U-, VY-, IZ-) collected from corpus and linguistic experiments. The traditional definition narrows allomorphy down to a mere variation of form where the meaning remains constant and variants are distributed complementarily. My findings show that submorphemic semantic differences and distributional overlap are not uncommon properties of morpheme variants. I suggest that allomorphy is a broader phenomenon that goes beyond the axioms of complementary distribution and identical meaning. I examine non-trivial cases of prefix polysemy and multifactorial conditioning of prefix distribution that make it difficult to assess the traditional criteria for allomorphy. Moreover, I present studies of semantic dissimilation of allomorphs and overlap in distribution that violate the absolute criteria for allomorphic relationship. I take the perspective of Cognitive Linguistics and propose an alternative usage-based model of allomorphy that is flexible enough to capture both standard exemplars and non-standard deviations. This model offers detailed applications of several advanced statistical models that optimize the criteria of both semantic “sameness” and distributional complementarity. According to this model, allomorphy is a scalar relationship between morpheme variants – a relationship that can vary in terms of closeness and regularity. Statistical modeling turns the concept of allomorphy into a measurable and verifiable correspondence of form-meaning variation. This makes it possible to measure semantic similarity and divergence and distinguish robust patterns of distribution from random effects.<br />

The Trust Paradox
An inquiry into the core of social life

Ellingsen, May-Britt<br />
This is a theoretical thesis, which pursues three ambitions. It develops a process perspective on trust, examines the integration between an empirical grounded theory of trust and sociological theory, and explores the relationship between trust and social change.
The process perspective on trust is generated from an empirical grounded study of trust processes at micro level, and about how macro level social change can affect micro level processes. The main finding is that trust is a dynamic quality; it is a continuous process of social construction. To trust is about making a leap of faith, from doubt into trusting. This leap has a social platform and is triggered by a sense of mutual understanding - trusting presupposes mutual understanding and a common social basis. This basis has pre-contractual, relational and structural elements.
The social processes discovered in the empirical grounded theory of trust are general social processes elaborated on in sociology, but these processes are not explicitly related theoretically to the development of trust. The thesis therefore explores how the main elements of the empirical grounded process theory of trust are elaborated on in sociological theory and relates this to trust. This exploration provides a theoretical grounding of the empirical grounded theory. However, grounded theory methodology is not very explicit about how empirical grounded theories can be theoretically grounded and integrated into existing theory. The thesis therefore discusses this issue and introduces four strategies for integration of grounded theory and existing theory. The process theory of trust is applied to analysing the trust paradox, which is an inquiry into the relationship between trust and social change. The trust paradox indicates that social change is about changes in our bases for trust, and that social change leads to development new configurations on of trust bases.; Dette er en teoretisk avhandling med tre ambisjoner: å utvikle et prosessperspektiv på tillit, undersøke integrasjon mellom tillitsteori generert fra empiriske data og sosiologisk teori, og utforske forholdet mellom tillit og sosial endring.

Nøkkelord: Sametinget, urfolk, selvbestemmelse, samstyring, autonomi; The topic of this dissertation is the Sami Parliament's position in political processes in Norway. Norway as a unitary state provides the starting point for the discussion. This has implications for how Sami politics can be organized within the state and how the Sami Parliament can be secured to be part of decision-making processes within the government system both on a local, regional and national level. The research question addressed is: How can indigenous people maintain and develop self-determination within the territorial framework of a unitary state?

The thesis consists of three articles. Based on discussion of Sami self-determination as non-territorial, this dissertation examines the Sami Parliament’s relation to the state’s political system as a "breaking in" - dimension. Self-determination understood as non-territorial refers to the Sami Parliament having political influence on many different and overlapping territorial scopes, and not to authority within a limited autonomous Sami area. The Sami Parliament thus strives to widen its decision-making fields within the governmental state, counties and municipalities.

The Sami Parliament's political autonomy is a central premise of the "breaking in" dimension. In the dissertation it is operationalized into a governance perspective. The articles examine how the Sami Parliament has strived to become part of public decision making processes through formal agreements. Such arrangements contribute to strengthening the Sami Parliament’s position within the established territorially based model of government, and by this becomes a part of the Norwegian unitary state system.
