What is SETI ?

Briefly speaking, SETI - Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence - is a serious scientific effort to try to detect signs of intelligent civilizations in our universe.

One way of detecting such signs might be to find radio signals that stand out as intelligent in the myriad of natural background radio noise in the universe.

How such an intelligent signal would look is the center of scientific dispute, but we seem to have some very good clues - assuming the senders will make their signal easy to find !

SETI@Home is a project where you can help analyze the vast amount of data collected by the Arecibo Radio Observatory by running a program on your computer.

The collective global SETI community includes many respected and established scientists, Nobel laureates, students and so on. You should visit the SETI Institute for more information.

SETI@Home

The vast amount of data collected by the Arecibo Radio Observatory in Puerto Rico is distributed among hundreds of thousands of computers on the Internet for analysis for candidate signals.

Visit the SETI@Home site for more information.

Other Activities

The SETI@Home project will only run for two years, and although the NTNU SETI organization was founded primarily for the local contributors, why not level this organization to act as a local interest community for SETI in general?

If possible, we could arrange lectures, projects, pizza-eating, costume parties -- whatever!

Send your suggestions to seti@stud.ntnu.no.
