Standing Conference of Presidents of Open and Distance Learning Institutions
Lillehammer, Norway
The globalisation process in education and training: Building the new international partnerships for the new world of open and distance learning
We have set two objectives for the 1996 ICDE SCOP conference;
1. To further develop collaboration between and among participating institutions, nations and cultures within ICDE SCOP.
2. To develop and formalise within ICDE a global meeting place between open and distance learning providers and the corporate world, in order to strengthen capacities in education and training.
To reach this objective we have invited representatives of some leading institutions and companies to join us in an ICDE International Business - Education Roundtable, which will be a permanent arm of the ICDE, and facilitate collaboration between the education sector and the corporate sector.
The Third ICDE SCOP Conference will take place in the town of Lillehammer in Norway situated 180 km north from Oslo on the shores of Lake Mjøsa. Lillehammer with its 24,000 inhabitants is internationally known as the host city of the 1994 Winter Olympic Games.
With its location at the northern end of Norway's largest lake and its close proximity to beautiful mountain scenery, Lillehammer has something to suit most tastes.
However, if water sports and mountain walking do not appeal to you, there are other attractions in and around the town centre which may be more tempting. A visit to Maihaugen Open-air Museum with its workshops, small farms and approximately 150 old buildings situated in tranquil settings within walking distance of the town centre, is a «must>. Here you can also visit the exhibition «We Won the Land> and enjoy a journey through an historic landscape from the Ace Age up to the present time.
The Olympic Centre is also close by and well worth a visit. Here there is a chance to experience and perceive the Olympic atmosphere in an untraditional, exciting and surprising way.
Should you decide to spend some time in Norway before or after the ICDE SCOP Conference, south-western Norway as well as Northern Norway boasts some of the world's most spectacular natural scenery with sea, fjords and mountains.

The 1996 annual ICDE SCOP Conference will be held in the facilities of the Lillehammmer College, which lies 5 km north of Lillehammer town centre.
In August 1995, the College moved into new premises, premises which previously housed the International Broadcasting Centre for the 1994 Winter Olympic Games. The building has been gutted and restructured internally for its new role as a top-class education centre. Lillehammer College is now the most modern and the most technologically advanced educational establishment in Norway.
