2006-2007 / Course descriptions / TF101298 Mechanics
Minimum college entrance requirements
To give the students knowledge in the basic laws of static and dynamic physics. Reference is made to mandatory requirements set in international convention on standards of training, certification and watchkeeping code (STCW 95), chapter AII/1 – AII/2 and AIII/1 – AIII/2. The course serves to extend the student’s understanding of the effect of load, buoyancy and heavy lifting on the behaviour of the ship in the sea.
After completing the course, the student should be able to:1.calculate force vector, resultant and moment 2.do equilibrium calculations 3.find the centre of lines, - areas, - volumes and of mass 4.calculate the surface area and volume of rotational body 5.calculate linear movement and rotational movement 6.know the three laws of Isaac Newton 7.calculate a conic pendulum 8.calculate work and energy 9.calculate moment of inertia 10.calculate momentum, impulse and impact11.angular momentum
Lectures and exercises
3-hour written examinationItems allowed for examination: Writing and drawing utensils, alphanumeric calculator and book of equitations. With reference to STCW-95 assessment will be focused towards the student's ability to demonstrate knowledge in appropriate basic Mechanics
