Minimum college entrance requirements.
The primary objective of the study is to prepare students to work as company leaders on a middle level within the seafarming and food processing industry, besides companies which are making use of principles and technics in biotechnology. The students gets also the necessary knowledge in chemistry, biology and economy, together with the necessary spesialization within the direction of the study which they choose.
Within seafarming there is a focus on analyses of water and marine enviroments, in addition to a general understanding of environmental challenges that organisms are facing.
The study also provides knowledge of possible species within the sea farming industry, and also topics related to fish health. It is also focused on challenges concerning running of fish farming plants and the consequences which incompetent running of companies will have for the economy.
Within fish processing industry the students achieve knowledge of food processing and quality assurance, with special regard to fish products. Within biotechnology
microbiology is focused on, and also technical biochemistry as well as technical microbiology (industrial biotechnology). One also emphasizes the importance of modern molecularbiological knowledge (molecular genetics) and immunology.
After completing their 3 years at the college the students will have the title Bachelor. They are qualified as company leaders, in sales, lab assistents, consultants i private and public sector. They are also qualified as assistants in scientific work. Students can also use the study as a buiding unit for further higher education.
The teaching is based on lectures, laboratorywork, groupteaching, and literature search. The last semester the students will do a lecture which comletes the study.
For all courses where laboratoryworka are included, the apperance is compulsory and the students must have an approved laboratoryjournal prior to the ecsamination.
The two first semesters are the same for all branches of the study. In the third semester
the study will be more specialized, with regard to courses within industry related to seafarming, fish processing, biotechnology and economy, dependent on what the students choose as optional courses.Molecular genetics and immunology are compulsive courses for the study in Food technology with directed against the industrial biotechnology. Nutrition and Qualityassurance II(HACCP) are compulsive for the study directed againstFish processing. Marine production and fish health are compulsive courses for the study in Aquatic Biology. There may be a requirement of a minimum of 8 students for the optional courses to be run.If the students choose courses other than courses directed within natural science, there may occur collisions in the scheduling of other courses. The students must be aware that some courses recommend that other courses be completed in advance.
The students complete their study after having carried out a research assignment (18 credits) at the college, then in cooperation with the fishing industry or other institutions either in Norway or abroad.
There is laboratory work throughout the study. The sum of the credits after 3 years must be at least 180, and also include all the required courses in the study.
