Give the students an introduction to the basic topics of biochemistry. Properties and metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. Enzymology, bioenergetics, biosynthesis and basic molecular genetics.
The molecular basis of life. Amino acids, peptides and proteins. Enzymes. Cofactors. Enzyme kinetics and regulation. Lipids. Biological membranes and transport. Carbohydrates. Principles of bioenergetics. Anabolism and catabolism. Glycolysis. The TCA cycle. The respiration chain. Oxidative phosphorylation. Biosynthesis of carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, nucleotides. Genes and chromosomes. DNA metabolism. RNA metabolism. Protein metabolism. Regulation of gene activity. Basic recombinant DNA technology.
Lectures, exercises and compulsory laboratory course.
Compulsory laboratory course must be completed and approved before the examination.
