General university college entrance requirements with extended knowledge in mathematics (2MX/2MY or 2MZ)
Work background.
In all professional fields, information to the public is important - and with better access and knowledge about modern technology the public will expect higher quality on distributed information.
Most information we deal with is connected to a geographic site - and is called geographic information (GI). This is a study for you who want to learn about the technology behind different information systems, how they are developed, and how to combine technology and information i different professional fields.
It is difficult to find any fields in society where GI does not play an important part. Area of application range from resource control and planning, register and analyse accidents and disaters, the building of interactive databases which deals with enviromental problems and navigation systems dealing with advandced GPS technology. Specialisation in simulation and visualisation or mobile solutions can give you a job in private enterprises either as a program developer in general information- or GI systems, or in media or entertainment businesses.
After finishishing the study the students will have:
• basic knowledge in handeling geographic information
• basic knowledge in modelling and link together different databases
• sufficient skills in the chosen specialities
• practise in handeling equipment and applications to solve GIS related tasks
• ability to contribute with GIS competance in multidiciplinary activities
Aalesund University College was the first college in Norway to start with GIS education in 1986, first as a field of study in Environmental engeneering, later as a separate two year program and from 2003 a three year bachelor programme.
.
Teaching consist of a combination of lectures, various projects and class exercises.
Work assignments are carried out both individually and in groups.
Theory is combined with learning program applications in graphic design, visualisation, planning and technical drawing.
The bachelor programme is based on a foundation consisting of a first year with introduction to geographic information, basic ICT knowledge and use of graphic design applications.
From the second year the students can besides compulsory GIS and ICT subjects choose between planning and municipal engineering or further specialisation in ICT.
The fourth and fifth term students can choose between major in computer science, visualisation and simulation techniques or in planning/public administration (some courses are given by Volda University College). Norwegian students who want to take parts of their study abroad, will normally go on exchange during these terms.
During their last term the students will, in groups of three, complete a final thesis/project (15 credits) in cooperation with an external partner (public or private).
