This is a study for you who want to work with advanced computer systems. Geographic information systems (GIS) handles new technology which intervenes in most professions.

A geographic information system is a system of hardware, software, and procedures designed to support the capture, management, manipulation, analysis, modeling and display of spatially-referenced data for solving complex planning and management problems.
Students will during their study learn basic skills in computing and database technology, and through practical projects be trained in physical planning. The students will after finishing the study be able to operate a GIS.

Students can choose to specialize either in GIS used in physical and technical planning, or in GIS and advanced computer technology.

The first year gives basic knowledge in ICT, surveying methods besides courses introducing to GIS and database technology.

The second year starts with an advanced course in GIS, 3D modelling and Physical planning.

The fourth and fifth term students can choose between major in computer science or in planning/public administration (courses given by Volda University College). Norwegian students who want to take parts of their study abroad, will normally go on exchange during these terms.

During their last term the students will, in groups of three, complete a final thesis/project (15 credits) in cooperation with an external partner (public or private).
