Bachelor in sociology

Target Group

This program is sutiable for students who plan to take a master in sociology. If combined with practical pedagogy you will be qualified to teach at college level. Our bachelor in sosiology is also considered relevant as further education for social workers.

Objectives

The sociolgoy bachelor presents basic knowledge on sociolology as a scientific discipline. Students will get to know leading authors in sociological history, and learn about important debates in contemporary sociological research. The student will also aquire knowledge on how theories amd various models are applied in sociological analysis, and how to critically assess the content, method and conclusions in sociological research. While there is a general introduction to sociology, the program has youth as its empirical focus. Questions related to socialisation and identity formation are of central importance in several courses, highlighting social institutions like the school system, the family and various youth age groups. Identifying new patterns on how youth act, and whether these patterns signal social change of a more fundamental character, is another main focus in the programme.

Contents

The programme has six modules in sociology, 90 ECTS credits all together. Four of these modules (60 ECTS credits) focus on youth, while two (30 ECTS credits) are shared with the bachelor programme in history. The shared modules are Social Data Analysis and the interdiscipolinary module Globalisation, the state and society. Students can also attend three other 10 credit modules. To complete the bachelor in sociology, students can attend several additional subjects at the HSF University College, like history or english, or they can incorporate modules from other universities in Norway or abroad.
