Master of Public Health
Institute of Community Medicine
The programmes start every autumn with the mandatory course HEL-3010 Basics in Public Health.
Please note that all teaching is in Norwegian, and we do not admit students from abroad to these programmes.
In order to sign up for Public Health courses at a Master level, Norwegians will need to have either completed the Bachelor Degree with health and/or social sciences as your major, or to have a Bachelor Degree and two years of relevant work experience as a health professional. A Bachelor Degree in Health Administration will also qualify you for admission to this Master Degree programme. In addition, you will need basic knowledge of statistics and basic understanding of health and disease, and ability to read scientific literature in English (cf. the prerequisites for admission for each course.)
The Master studies primarily target health workers, but they also have relevance for others who wish to add to their qualifications about public health. Depending on certain criteria, students may choose between a 120 credit Master programme or a programme of 90 credits. Studies are organised as courses/modules, and instruction mainly takes place over the Internet and in compulsory gatherings where students meet for brief periods of time. During the intermediate periods, students work via the Internet at home, using ClassFronter as Learning Management System. All students must have a personal computer at their disposal at home, and must know how to use it.
The degree Master of Public Health (MPH), which is the equivalent of the international degree, will qualify for leading positions in the health services, both public and private and particularly at hospitals. It also qualifies for international health work, for instance in humanitarian organisations, and for teaching positions. Students are also prepared to carry out research, and thus involves a possibility of working in private and public research institutions. Institute of Community Medicine also is a member of ASPHER
