Tromsø Papers
Centre for Peace Studies at the University of Tromsø hereby presents Working Papers No 7.
This paper is written by Christine Schweitzer, working as a researcher for the German ‘Institute for Peace Work and Nonviolent Conflict Transformation’. She is currently doing research for the international NGO Nonviolent Peaceforce, and a study on comparing conflict interventions in the Balkans. The paper reflects that there are different approaches to third party non-violent intervention in conflict situations. The two strategies mainly to be found are those of peacekeeping and peacebuilding. But she claims that this has to be combined with peacemaking going on at a local level in order to be able to implement the peacebuilding or the peacekeeping project. Schweitzer also argues these peacestrategies possibility to influence in practical life, and she elaborates some of the lessons learned working with Nonviolent Interventions. Finally Schweitzer discuss the topic Nonviolent Intervention as a alternative to the Military.
