Identity and Security in a Globalising Context - A CPS research mini-conference
Identity and Security in a Globalising Context
A CPS research mini-conference, University of Tromsø, 6th-7th October, 2004
Keynote speakers:
Professor Michael Shapiro, Department of Political Science, University of Hawai, USA - Infowar
Professor Rob B. J. Walker, Keele University, UK - TBA
(call for proposals)
Conference theme
The point of departure for the conference is the fluidity and complexity of identitive associations, which nonetheless tend to 're-coalesce' and harden their ingroup-outgroup boundaries, partly as a consequence of security fixations. Some relevant themes (to name a few) in this regard would be: constitutionalism and security; securitised private communities; and the changing character of nationalism and internationalism.
Conference goals
The overarching goal is to build research collaboration and/or coordination in a broad thematic area of interest to many here at the University and also to an important figure in the development of a post-structural approach to international relations and peace studies (and contributor to the development of our own Centre for Peace Studies) Rob Walker. As such, this call for contributors is directed primarily to academic staff and postgraduate students with relevant scholarly interests. The sessions in Lauklines are hoped, among other things, to provide the foundation for an edited volume organised around the conference theme.
The research conference is organised by the Acting Academic director at the Centre for Peace Studies, Stuart Robinson.
