Welcome to the Department of Philosophy
Do you wonder what knowledge really is, what it means to know something, how we can find out what’s true and untrue, what is right and what is wrong, what a good society is, how we should live and what it is to be a human being – then philosophy might be something for you.
Philosophy tries to bring clarity to what’s diffuse and unclear, to bring shadows to the light and examine the underlying and what is taken for granted.
We offer bachelor’s program, master’s program and doctorates in philosophy.
We are also responsible for examen philosophicum and parts of the studies for examen facultatum.
As philosophy works with foundational problems within the individual sciences, different courses in philosophy will be useful as a minor field/support subjects.
Many of our courses in feminist philosophy, eco-philosophy and ethics are of a more general interest and can be in included in a range of other education programs.
We are 19 permanent employees and several scholarship holders that teach and research on a vide and varied field: history of philosophy, scientific theory, ethics, logic, political philosophy, aesthetics and language philosophy, as well as more special areas including feminist and eco-philosophical perspectives, religious philosophy, war related issues, philosophy and children and migration and just distribution.
Education in philosophy does not only qualify for teaching and research within this field. Philosophers are also employed in the cultural sector, for example in media and publishing houses, or in state or communal administration and to an increasing degree are persons with higher education in philosophy employed in the private sector.
