Gjesteforelesning, D. Summers

Professor Danny Summers, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St John’s, Canada will give the following guest lecture in the main Auditorium at the Auroral Observatory at 1515 today Monday October 2:

Current Problems in Radiation Belt Physics

A prevailing problem in magnetospheric physics is to explain the energization of radiation belt particles. In particular,a current and long-standing problem is to explain the generation of highly energetic (MeV) electrons in the Earth's outer radiation belt during some magnetic storms. These energetic electrons are potentially hazardous to satellites and humans in space. We discuss the role of wave-particle interactions in generating high-energy electrons in the radiation belt. We further discuss the various problems in constructing a global model of radiation belt electron dynamics.
