Title:
Restoration of images affected by multiplicative noise by using separable and nonseparable wavelets
Abstract
Multiplicative noise affects images obtained with several coherent sensors, e.g., SAR, ultrasounds probes, etc. Recently, wavelet-based techniques demonstrated their effectiveness in removing additive signal-independent and multiplicative noise. For such applications, where redundancy is not a problem, the undecimated wavelet transform is usually considered.
In this lecture, some methods based on LMMSE and MAP estimation in the undecimated wavelet domain for the restoration of images affected by multiplicative noise are reviewed.
New achievements obtained with the application of the nonsubsampled countourlet transform, characterized by the extraction of multiresolution and multidirection features and realized by means of a nonseparable filterbank, are also presented. Some experimental results obtained with separable and nonseparable filterbanks are shown in order to assess and compare the performance of the two decompositions.

Title:
Polarimetric SAR remote sensing: principles and application
Abstract
The recent or imminent launching of polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) systems provides an unprecedented opportunity for applying advanced PolSAR information processing techniques to the important tasks of environmental monitoring. SAR polarimetry is a unique tool collecting information required to extract geophysical and biophysical parameters from earth’s surface, due to the strong link between the physical properties of an observed scene (geometrical structure, dielectric constant, …) and the polarimetric behaviour of its SAR response. This remote sensing technique has found many successful applications in crop monitoring and damage assessment, in forestry clear cut mapping, deforestation and burn mapping, in land surface structure (geology) land cover (biomass) and land use, in hydrology (soil moisture, flood delineation), in sea ice monitoring, in oceans and coastal monitoring (oil spill detection) etc.
This short presentation will be composed of four main parts:
- Review of polarimetry basics
- Overview of selected applications of PolSAR remote sensing
- Forest remote sensing using polarimetric interferometric SAR (PolinSAR) data
- Urban area remote sensing using PolinSAR data and Time-Frequency techniques.
