Seminar Series on Bus Protocols and Switch Fabric Interconnects
04.11.2002
Foredragsholdere
Bruce D. Shriver
This seminar series consists of three 2-hour seminars on bus protocols and switch fabric interconnects from high-performance microprocessors and systems-on-a-chip. The evolution of bus protocols from simple tenured bus protocols using connected transactions to split-transaction protocols using optionally deferred reply transactions and supporting multiple outstanding transactions will be explored. The complications that coherence transactions introduce in shared memory systems and multi-level systems will be discussed, as well as some of the approaches to deal with them. Switch-fabric-based architectures will also be discussed and contrasted with bus-based solutions. Infiniband, RapidIO, PLX and on-chip switch schemes such as SuperHyway will be presented. These seminars are intended to give those attending an understanding of issues confronting computer architects and computer systems architects in achieving high-bandwidth, low latency communications within processors and systems. Some comments will also be made concerning standards, consortia, and patents related to buses and switched fabrics.
