The Ghost of GUIDE Past, Present and Future: Developing context-aware appl for mobile environments?

10.08.2001

Foredragsholdere
Keith Mitchell & Keith Cheverst

Abstract:
This seminar will present an overview of the GUIDE Project at Lancaster (http://www.guide.lancs.ac.uk/). The aim of GUIDE is to experiment with context aware applications and supporting infrastructure in the particular area of tourism. The system utlises wireless communications and the mobile computing devices in order to provide city visitors with context-aware information while they explore Lancaster. In more detail, the system tailors the hypermedia-based information presented to visitors according to their current location and their personal preferences, for example the visitor may have a special interest in medieval architecture. In addition, because the system utilises wireless communications, visitors can receive the latest information updates or even browse information on the world wide web while they roam through the city. Extensive field trials have been carried out providing invaluable experience of using such advanced mobile technology.

Format:
The seminar will be a double act by the two Keiths lasting approx 2 x 30 mins. This will then be followed by a short demo for interested parties. Keith Mitchell will provide a general overview of the GUIDE Applications and Architecture before commenting on future direction of the research. Keith Cheverst will then discuss issues such as evaluation, human factors, context sharing, and pushing/pulling content/context.

About the speakers:
Keith Mitchell is a Research Associate in the computing department at Lancaster University. His research interests include context-awareness, distributed systems, mobile and ubiquitous computing and human-computer interaction. Keith is chief architect of The Lancaster GUIDE Project and, more recently, a senior researcher involved with the Mobile IPv6 Research Environment (MORE). The Lancaster Mobile IPv6 Research Environment is a commercially funded facility for conducting research and development into next generation mobile network protocols, ser-vices and applications.

Dr Keith Cheverst obtained his PhD from Lancaster in 1999 and is currently a lecturer in the University's computing department. His general research interests include context-awareness, distributed systems, CSCW and mobile and ubiquitous computing. Keith is especially interested in the implications for human-computer interaction that arise when developing interactive systems that exhibit context-aware behaviour. He is principal investigator in the CASCO project, which is investigating the human factors issued that arise when supporting cooperation through the sharing of personal context.
