Next Generation Distributed Systems (The 2K and dynamicTAO approach)

02.05.2001

Foredragsholdere
Fabio Kon

Abstact:
The first decade of the new millennium will witness an explosive growth in the number and diversity of networked devices and portals. We foresee high degrees of mobility, heterogeneity, and interactions among computing devices connected to global networks. While previous research in distributed operating systems solved many problems related to resource management, they seldom addressed the problems of heterogeneity and dynamic adaptability. On the other hand, middleware solutions, like CORBA and Java/Jini, solve part of the heterogeneity problem by permitting seamless communication among different platforms. But, they do not address dynamic resource management and adaptability for applications requiring high-performance distributed computing.
In this lecture we will discuss research results from the 2K project at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. 2K is an integrated distributed system architecture that addresses the problems of resource management in heterogeneous networks, dynamic adaptability, security, and configuration of component-based distributed applications. Communication in 2K is supported by dynamicTAO, a CORBA-compliant reflective ORB that supports dynamic configuration.

About the speaker:
Fabio Kon is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Computer Science at the University of São Paulo. He received BS and MS degrees in Computer Science from the University of São Paulo and a BA degree in Music from the São Paulo State University. Recently, he got his PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the area of Automatic Configuration of Component-Based Distributed Systems. His research interests include reflective middleware, distributed operating systems, object-oriented systems, dynamic configuration, mobile agents, computer music, and multimedia.
