Abstact:
Quality of Service (QoS) is a broad research area investigating support for non-functional application requirements, including requirements for response time, throughput, utilization, synchronization, etc. In a distributed, multicomponent system, all components must be QoS-aware and work together to achieve a specified level of QoS per application, per session, and per interactive request. Various research communities have proposed mechanisms for QoS management. Early proposals were tailored to a particular type of service component in the end-to-end application, such as QoS management in the network. Recent works have attempted to extend component-specific solutions to create a set of generic middleware services for QoS management. In general, the proposed QoS management mechanisms are not separated from the component to be managed, the sequencing of management actions is fixed and ordered for a specific component type, and a generic interface that can be used with all types of components in a distributed environment has not been proposed.
In this talk, I will present our current work on a generic QoS manager that is
Separate from the managed application service components,
General and reusable by all types of new and old components,
Driven by replaceable policies.
We propose a minimal set of interfaces between the generic QoS manager and a managed component.
