"In this lecture, I will present motivation and background for many of the new, ongoing developments in the database system area that are needed additionally to new data model concepts to support modern applications. The lecture will mainly focus on three of these developments:
Distributed database systems
Heterogeneous database systems
Active database systems
The mechanisms for these three kinds of database systems are mostly independent of each other and often we find today a combination of them in existing database systems."
