"Replicating a server increases the vulnerability to disclosure for secrets being stored by that server. Thus, services built from replicated servers are arguably more vulnerable to attack than a single server would be.
Secret sharing is a branch of cryptography concerned with partitioning secret information in a manner that (i) the individual shares reveal nothing but (ii) certain sets of shares can be combined to recover the original secret. Secret sharing thus provides a basis for reducing the vulnerability of secrets maintained by replicated servers in a distributed system.
This talk will introduce secret sharing schemes and discuss how those schemes might be deployed in implementing fault-tolerant and secure distributed services. Background in cryptography is not assumed."
