Scalable Replication with Chains

Title: Scalable Replication with Chains

Speaker: Fred B. Schneider, Cornell University, USA and Department of Computer Science, UiTø.

Abstract:
Large-scale information systems must provide high throughput for query and update requests, despite failures. Chain replication gives a new way to satisfy this requirement. It can be seen as a variant of the classic primary-backup approach; it exploits the insight that reconfiguration protocols can be the basis both for handling failures (server deletion) and addressing surges in load (server addition). The basic chain replication protocol will be outlined, a correctness proof sketched, and performance data obtained from simulations will be discussed. The performance characteristics of this seemingly simple protocol are rather nuanced.

Joint work with Robbert van Renesse.
