Tid: Fredag 21. januar 2005, kl 12:15 til 13:15
Sted: Store auditorium, Realfagsbygget, UiTø.
Tittel: "Information Retrieval from Digital Video Libraries"
Foredragsholder: Dr Cathal Gurrin, Centre for
Digital Video Processing at Dublin City University (DCU).
Absract:
Huge archives of digital video data exist with some video libraries growing by over a million videos per year, yet most video archives are reliant on manually annotated metadata to support search and retrieval. At the same time, storage costs are plummeting, with a lifetime of video costing little more than $50k to store. It is of no surprise then that automatic video search and retrieval has become a hot topic in recent years.
We at the CDVP, Dublin, have been actively involved in video information retrieval research for a number of years and are renowned for developing cutting-edge interactive video search, browse and retrieval systems. In this talk I will discuss what techniques are available today to support content-based navigation operations for digital video, and what future developments are likely to be seen. Starting with overview of video information retrieval in general, I examine how video information can be automatically structured for subsequent fast access, how searching and browsing can be supported, and how video retrieval systems are evaluated within the TREC (trec.nist.gov) framework. Much of this talk will be illustrated with examples or demonstrations of CDVP video retrieval systems, which are based on the distributed Físchlár framework and utilise a high performance distributed search engine called Físreal, which has been designed to search large quantities of digital video (or web pages) efficiently and effectively.
Bio:
Dr Cathal Gurrin is a post-doctoral researcher working in the Centre for Digital Video Processing at Dublin City University (DCU). He obtained his PhD from DCU in 2002 for his work on developing techniques to support searching on very large internet-sized web collections. His current research interests include Video Retrieval from large video libries and image/photo retrieval, specifically the retrieval of personal photo collections. In addition, he is interested in large scale retrieval of WWW documents, and has recently been heavily involved in the development of a high-performance, scalable, distributed WWW search engine. He has written many IR related publications in recent years, including the 4th most popular article downloaded from the international Kluwer journal Information Retrieval.
