Tittel: "Managing Concurrency in Plan 9 Applications"
Foredragsholder: Professor Sape Mullender, Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ.
Abstract:
Many applications have to deal with concurrency in one form or another. Most often, the concurrency is a consequence of having to deal with multiple asynchronous input and output streams, e.g., keyboard, mouse, window events, file i/o, timers. The thread library in the Plan 9 operating system provides a particularly elegant set of tools to make coping with asynchrony easier.
I'll use a music player with a graphical user interface as the example to demonstrate how the thread library works and how we can write applications that are both concurrent and lock free.
I will also show how file systems are a nice tool for turning centralized applications into distributed ones.
