Abstract:
The modelling and simulation of clinical processes at a healthcare provider's site and in healthcare networks is gaining increasing attention.
When modelling a clinical process, the entities such as infrastructure, staff members, devices, and capacities are set into relationships as to mirror the real situation at the site. Parameters for the adjustment of the model are taken from measurements of e.g. times and numbers such as length of waiting queues, as observed in the running organization. Since the events taking place in an organization, for example the arrival times of patients at a certain entry point to the hospital, are not deterministic, simulations usually depend on stochastic methods where events are drawn from a distribution. By studying the models, critical pathways and bottlenecks can be identified, and solution for an improvement of the organization's performance can be simulated and evaluated before concrete measures are taken to redesign the infrastructure and the workflows accordingly. The talk will give an introduction to such kind of modelling using the Arena tool.
Biography:
Alexander Horsch is currently head of the working group Telemedicine and Image Processing at the Institute for Medical Statistics and Epidemiology (IMSE) of the Munich University of Technology (TUM), associate professor (Faculty of Medicine) and adjunct professor (Faculty of Science) of the University of Tromsø (UIT). Since 1986 he is working as a manager and medical informatics professional at the IMSE. He got his Dr.rer.nat. in computer science 1989. He was head of the medical computing centre of the university hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar 1987-1995. Since 1992 he is lecturer in medical informatics, and he was manager of several projects in telemedicine and computer-aided diagnosis. Since September 1998 he is chair of the working group Medical Image Processing of the German Society of Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (GMDS). In 1999 he got his Dr.med.habil. in medical informatics from the medical faculty. From 1998 to 2003 he was adjunct professor in telemedicine of the University of Heidelberg. Since 2000 he is German representative in the Council of the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI) and in 2001 he initiated and since then is chairing the EFMI Working Group on Medical Image Processing. He is member of scientific program committees of MIE and CARS as well as for other national and international conferences. He is reviewer for various national and international journals, conferences and scientific societies. In 2004 he was member of the ESA Telemed Working Group, and recently he joined the editorial board of the newly founded CARS journal for computer-assisted radiology and surgery. Last summer he became professor in the newly established education for Master in Telemedicine and eHealth at the University of Tromsø.
