Advanced distributed systems seminar - Part 1
24.03.2003
Foredragsholdere
Leslie Lamport & Fred B. Schneider
Program
Monday 24.3, Store Aud. Mat.Nat, UiTø:
9.00-10.15: "Implementing Security and Fault-tolerance - Part I".
Fred B. Schneider, Cornell University/University of Tromsø.
It is indeed possible to build a trustworthy system from untrustworthy components, but not by implementing the fault-tolerance and security separately. Separation of concerns just does not apply. These lectures will therefore discuss the role of threshold cryptography and weak computing models in building fault-tolerant and secure services. We will also discuss basic protocols for these models, including recent work in proactive secret sharing and distributed blinding.
10.15-10.30: break
10.30-11.45: "Implementing Security and Fault-tolerance - Part II"
11.45-1.30: lunch (on your own)
"How to Build a Reliable Distributed System: The State-Machine Approach"
Leslie Lamport, Microsoft Research Silicon Valley.
1.30-2.00: Part I: "Using State Machines"
How to design an arbitrary system as a state machine and implement it with a general algorithm for implementing state machines.
2.00-2.15: break
2.15-3.15: Part II: "Paxos"
The Paxos consensus algorithm and how to use it to implement a state machine.
3.15-3.30: break
3.30-5.00 Part III: "Byzantine Paxos"
Making the Paxos algorithm tolerate malicious (Byzantine) faults.
