Distributed Transaction Management - A Simulation
20.01.2005
Abstract:
A transaction is traditionally defined so as to provide the properties of atomicity, consistency, integrity and durability for the operations it performs on shared data. Many factors affect the performance of distributed transaction processing, including the two-phase commit protocol (2PC). 2PC is an important protocol in distributed transaction management. Distributed transaction management relies on the 2PC to coordinate the commit of transactions. 2PC guarantees the atomicity of distributed transactions. The cost of the two-phase commit protocol is an important factor in the performance of distributed transactions.
In this thesis, we set up the simulation test bed in OMNeT++ of distributed client/server systems in general and 2PC in particular. More specifically, we quantify the differences in the performances of the two widely known variants of 2PC, i.e. the presumed abort and presumed commit protocols.
