Making an EJB Container for handheld devices
16.12.2002
Abstract
Enterprise JavaBeans is a middleware component architecture that makes it easier to develop distributed applications in the Java language. The components (enterprise beans) are deployed in a container, a runtime environment that provides services to the beans.
This thesis presents the design and implementation of a container for handheld devices. It runs on a Java 2 Micra Edition virtual machine, and is capable of hosting basic stateless session beans. We tried to include as much functionality from the Enterprise JavaBeans specifications as possible, but have focused on creating a lightweight container with minimal requirements. We have also introduced an architecture that support client-side interceptors. This makes it possible to write software that are executed on the client.
The application developed in this work is a part of the Arctic Beans at the University of Tromsø. The objective of Arctic Beans is to create middleware that is open and more reflective of Arctic Beans is to create middleware will be better suited for dynamic environments where the requirements change over time. The project focuses on the areas, architecture, security and transactions.
