More about Teacher Education

Professional opportunities
After finishing this programme, students are qualified to teach from the intermediate level up to the upper secondary level at Norwegian schools. The programme is also suitable for students who are interested in other kinds of educational work or pedagogical development.

Admission
To be admitted, students need to have finished their subject workload, which together with Practical-Pedagogical Education will give them competence to teach. There are special regulations for admission to the Practical-Pedagogical Education programme at Tromsø University.

The programme in general
This is a one-year programme of 60 credits (ECTS). Each year a full-time study programme is offered which starts in the autumn (application deadline April 15), and a part-time study programme which starts in spring (application deadline November 1).

The work load is divided between pedagogy (30 credits) and teaching theory for specific subject matter areas/profession didactics. During the programme the students also need to do a work practice of 14 weeks for full-time students, and approximately 100 hours for part-time students.

Organization
The full-time study takes place over two succeeding semesters. Each of the semesters begins with five weeks of studying theory. Then the students are to do seven weeks of work practice, and finish the semester with another four weeks of theory.

Both the study of theory and the work practice are obligatory.

The part-time study is organized into four succeeding semesters, so that the content of theory and assignments during the first year of study, are equivalent to the full-time study’s first semester.

The part-time students’ work practice stretches over all four semesters, and is usually connected to the student’s own school and pupils.

Both studies follow the same study plan, and provide the students with the same competence.

The study programme consists of the following components:
  1. Pedagogy
  2. Teaching theory for specific subject matter areas/ profession didactics
  3. Work practice

We have sought to integrate, as far as possible, the various components of the programme. For example; the theory is practice and/or topic oriented, while pedagogy and teaching theory/profession didactics are integrated in the final written and oral exams. A consequence is that no component can be exempted on the basis of previous education.

Syllabus
The syllabus consists of approximately 1000 pages of pedagogy, and 1000 pages of teaching theory/profession didactics. 400 pages are to be self-selected by the students. The self-selected part has to be approved by the subject teacher, and submitted along with the written assignments.

The reading list is available at IPLU.

Examination
The theory examination is divided into two parts: A portfolio consisting of 4 written assignments (home-based assignments), and an individual oral exam.

The work practice part of the programme needs to be approved, as do the portfolio, in order for the student to be eligible for the oral exam. The practice part of the programme consists of an evaluation regarding the student’s qualifications as a teacher.
