Prosedyrekonkurranse El§a Moot Court Competition

Prosedyrekonkurranse El§a Moot Court Competition

"I represent The European Law Students' Association (ELSA) – the world's largest independent, non-political, non-profit-making organisation represented in more than 200 Universities in 35 countries across Europe with membership in excess of 30 000 students and young lawyers.

ELSA has been involved in Moot Court Competitions for a number of years. However it was considered to be more beneficial to develop this experience into an international moot court competition aimed at contributing towards the development of law students worldwide. The first edition of the ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO Law (EMC²) took place in April 2003 and will be held for the 5th time this academic year in Geneva on 01st-06th May 2007.

The Competition takes place in Geneva with the Semi-Finals and Grand Final at the Headquarters of The World Trade Organisation (WTO). Together with Technical Supporter of the Competition – The World Trade Organisation – ELSA seeks to help the law students from all over the world to become more internationally minded and professionally skilled in the field of the international trade law. The aim of the Competition is both to encourage further developments on the subject matter in the curriculum of academic institutions and also to contribute to the ongoing discussion about globalisation in the context of WTO Agreements.

As it is known, a moot court competition is a simulated court case where teams represent the different parties and argue the case out in front of a panel of judges, all experts in WTO Law. The Case of the EMC² 2006/2007 focuses on the highly topical issue of access to patented drugs to address a serious public health issue. The legal issues relate to the business distribution scheme and the continued tension between the WTO Multilateral Agreements and Free Trade Agreement Regulation which impact on pharmaceuticals.

Since its establishment the Competition expanded to 5 continents and with 18 teams across the globe participating in the Final Oral Round of the EMC² in Geneva in May 2007. We would like to promote our Competition and therefore would like to ask you to distribute the information contained in this e-mail as well as the website address of the Competition to the interested law students/Faculties of Law through your organisation.
