Honorary Doctor Professor Barbara Neis
Professor Barbara Neis at the Memorial University in Newfoundland, Canada has been nominated as an Honorary Doctor at the University of Tromsø.
Dr Neis, with an outstanding academic production, has in much of her research focused on men's and women's working and livelihood situations in coastal communities in Newfoundland and as such provided us with important insights and enhanced our knowledge about the NORTH on the American continent. Not the least has she focused on the crisis struck costal communities and analysed these in light of theories of globalization. Her research is at the crossing point between social and natural sciences - lately also the medical sciences. Theoretically she has developed feminist theory as related and linked to theories of globalization, community studies and more general sociological theories - the latter being her academic discipline.

For the last 20 years Dr. Neis has collaborated with and inspired employees at different faculties and centres here at our university, as she has been an inspiration for many scholars on both sides of the Atlantic, in the South and in the North. In 2006 she was awarded the prestigious Trudeau Foundation Fellowship in Canada. KVINNFORSK, who proposed Dr. Neis for the position of doctor honoraries, is looking forwarded to future collaboration and for the opportunity to continue taking part in Dr. Neis' broad and multidisciplinary reservoir of knowledge.
