Description of competence
Research on gender perspectives in philosophy, the platonic legacy. Mary Wollstonecraft, John Stuart & Harriet Taylor Mill, Simone de Beauvoir, Edith Stein, Hannah Arendt, Iris Murdoch.
Current research projects
Iris Murdoch’s different voices of philosophy and fiction. The 1950-ies in retrospect.
The main purpose of the study is to try to answer three questions:
1. Do the two voices of Iris Murdoch – the novelist’s and the philosopher’s - contradict each other, do they speak of different things or do they say the same in two different ways?
2. What can be communicated in a novel that cannot be communicated in philosophy?
3. Ought the academic field of philosophy include novels in its curriculum, and if so, what novels and for what reason?
The study concentrates on Murdoch’s earliest intellectual work in the 1950-ies. The primary sources for the study are 19 philosophical essays and articles, and 4 novels that were all published before 1960. But I will use later philosophical works when necessary for shedding light on some issue. I will situate Murdoch’s work in the context of contemporary European philosophy and try to figure out if/how her thinking deviates from the mainstream western philosophy as an academic field of her days.
