Topic for youre PhD project
“Life is a salt-fish”. Life-stories of Polish labour migrants in Iceland.
The purpose of the thesis is a comprehensive anthropological study of the temporary labour migration from Poland to Iceland, with special attention given to describe migrants’ everyday life, work experience, leisure and holidays. I also intent to show the process of developing social networks (within and outside their own ethnic group), including development of ethnic institutions and their role in the migrants' adjustment to the host country, as well as in the formation of the migrant community. However, for widespread understanding of the subject, I find necessary to draw historical and social background of the considered migration, and therefore begin by discussing the general factors shaping this movement, finding the main patterns of the migration, following its dynamics in time, as well as investigating the individual’s motivations behind the decision to come to Iceland.
