Information for applicants
I. Basis of admission
The Master Programme in Indigenous Studies aims to recruit students from the North/West/East as well as the South. 20 students are admitted every year. The programme is primarily directed at students with former basic training in the social sciences, but students from law studies and humanities may also be admitted. A special interest in indigenous issues is a precondition.
The programme further aims at recruiting students under the Quota Programme as well as students sponsored by NORAD (Norwegian Agency For Development Cooperation). A certain amount of seats will be reserved for students with such funding.
Admission of students from different countries and regions will be emphasized in order to ensure a varied student group. Ethnic background will also be relevant in this respect. A mixed group of students will strengthen the comparative aspects of the programme, and will contribute to international network building.
II. Admission Requirements
All Applicants must document three years of study at university level beyond the basic entrance requirements, equivalent to a Bachelor degree.
All applicants must enclose a description of the background for their desire to apply for the Master Programme, and of what they expect from the programme (1 page). Experience from work related to indigenous peoples and/or studies must be documented. Applicants from universities other than the University of Tromsø should enclose a short description of all relevant courses mentioned in applications and certificates.
The programme is taught in English and applicants must be able to document adequate proficiency in English.
III. Scholarships
There are two scholarship programmes open for international applicants:
NORAD Fellowship Programme
The NORAD fellowship programme is a funding programme financed by the Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation (NORAD), providing admitted students with full sponsorship for the period of studies. NORAD-applicants are students from prioritized developing countries applying for specific English Master’s Degree programmes (2 years). The number of applicants exceed by far the number of places available and admission is therefore very competitive.

Quota applicants are students from developing countries, certain eastern European countries and the Palestine Territories applying for selected English Master’s Degree Programmes (2 years) or PhD-studies (3 years). The number of applicants exceed by far the number of places available and admission is therefore very competitive.

Self-financing Master’s Degree students
