Master"s of Indigenous Studies Thesis Title: Globalization and Indigenous Resource Management in Russia: Oil Companies and Terriritories of Traditional Nature Use.
Thesis Topic/Question: How are indigenous rights to land and resources protected in Russia when areas of traditional land use are experiencing encrouchment and competition by multinational oil companies? How can international standards of indigenous land use protections be implemented and what are the challenges of implementing those protections?
The thesis is co-funded by the research project entitled “The Challenge of Indigenousness: Politics of Rights, Resources and Knowledge” at the Centre for Sámi Studies, University of Tromsø, financed by the Norwegian Research Council.
Motivations for applying to the MIS program: “I had been involved in a project with RAIPON, (Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North) when I was encouraged to apply to this program. They were seeking Russian indigenous youth to study abroad. My own Vepsian (an Indigenous people from Russia) background and my educational background in studies relevant to indigenous peoples were also important factors.”
